Sun shone down on the more than 1,200 Vancouver Island locavores gathered last Sunday for the 2nd Annual Defending Our Backyard festival in Metchosin outside of Victoria.

Last week plums were falling out of the sky. My backyard was littered with golden and purple orbs; italian, mirabelle and green gage.

The first thing that catches your eye as you enter the high-ceilinged restaurant is the art. It seems as if every inch of wallspace is taken up with various sized paintings—some by local artists, others reproductions of famous painting such as Modigliani.
