Submit a story

We encourage professional and non-professional writers to send us their stories about Vancouver Island. Here’s your chance to fulfill that desire to be a food journalist. Submit us a story showcasing local food, people – celebration, preservation and education (that’s almost a poem!).

Like all good journalism you must do your homework. If you mention farms or businesses you should always be kind, we try to focus on the positive and motivational aspects of local food. We want people to be inspired and salivating at the end of the article. Maybe it was that great beach picnic with local crab and a bottle of island wine, that family gathering around a free-range turkey – or your adventures in canning and preserving the harvest.

Gardening, tips on dealing with a wheelbarrow of zucchini, a favourte restaurant or helpful market are all great topics to share with the community. You can upload a photo to illustrate the article and a recipe or two will only add to the usefulness of your efforts.

The Rules

  • Keep it short – around 500 words
  • Your article may be edited for clarity, spelling, grammar and context
  • No profanity, warped opinions or expressing of hatred or racism
  • Food and drink should be the focus (growing, buying, cooking, eating and enjoying)
  • Share your passion for local products and businesses
  • Be honest about any personal connections to businesses
  • Help support local non-profit groups and give love and kudos to the hardworking volunteers
  • Other than that – there are no rules!!
